Setting sail in Olympic waters

Ben| | August 7, 2010

Over 25 Sea Cadets from Rugby set sail to Weymouth for the unit’s annual boating week last week (25th- 30th July).

The cadets’ trip to the Sea Cadet Training Centre in Weymouth is a highlight of the events calendar and this year was even better as the facilities have recently had a £3million renovation.

The new state-of-the-art facilities were at full capacity for the first time since it opened in April 2010, with 53 cadets and 17 members of staff attending.

Cadets that attended the week were taught sailing, power boating, canoeing and kayaking at a variety of levels ranging from beginner all the way up to racing standard.

Cadets were able to test out their newly learnt skills in an excellent location as the waters the cadets learnt in, Weymouth and Portland, are set to be the venue for the Olympic 2012 Sailing events.

Those that learnt power boating also visited the Olympic Sailing Academy, which houses the training facilities for all the British sailing teams and will be the home of sailing in the 2012 Olympic Games.

The waters were busy with international sailing teams practicing ahead of the 2012 games, with team members from Japan, Finland, Sweden and Argentina clocking in training hours.

Despite being the sea cadet unit furthest away from the sea, the cadets, aged between 10 and 18, gained 37 waterborne qualifications between them.

All qualifications earned were accredited by the Royal Yachting Association or the British Canoeing Union.

The fun wasn’t all water based with the Junior Sea Cadets, aged 10-12, trying out the 20 foot climbing wall at the centre, which was donated by the Royal Marines.
