Rugby Sea Cadets

Over 25 Sea Cadets from Rugby set sail to Weymouth for the unit’s annual boating week last week (25^th- 30^th July).

The cadets’ trip to the Sea Cadet Training Centre in Weymouth is a highlight of the events calendar and this year was even better as the facilities have recently had a £3million renovation.

The new state-of-the-art facilities were at full capacity for the first time since it opened in April 2010, with 53 cadets and 17 members of staff attending.

Teenagers in the local area made Rugby Sea Cadet unit their first port of call at an open evening showcasing the youth charity’s activities and facilities.

Youngsters and parents were introduced to the organisation and shown the group’s windsurfs, boating equipment and naval uniforms, all of which display its strong links to the Royal Naval & Royal Marines.

Other activities were discussed in a short presentation and included; sailing, shooting, Royal Marines fieldcraft (how to live as a soldier), kayaking, canoeing and Royal Navy & Royal Marines ceremonial.

On Monday 1st March 2010 the Junior Sea Cadets from Rugby Unit will be visiting Rugby Fire Station to learn about their role as one of the emergency services. The knowledge that the Juniors will gain will count towards one of their red modules.  More information on this event from PCI Gareth Head or TI Ana Wileman.

Just a reminder that the cadets will be swimming on Tuesday 23rd February from 17.20 to 18.45, meeting in the reception to the swimming pool.

Cadets that haven’t already qualified, will be assessed for the Sea Cadet Swimming Test and some of the practical parts of the Water Safety Certificate, a qualification that all cadets need before taking part in any afloat activities with the Sea Cadets.

Please remember to bring a T1 – Parents Consent Form as cadets will not be able to take part in the event without one.

The annual presentation evening for Rugby Sea Cadets will be held tonight at the Royal Naval Association Club in Rugby.  The presentation evening is a time to look back on 2009 and reward the cadets and adults with a number of trophies, certificates and prizes.  We will be joined by the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Don Williams and other guests, to include Mr Bob Bradbrook, the President of the Rugby Dunsmore Rotary Club.

The cadets are looking forward to the presentation and social evening which follows with a disco and buffet.

Don’t forget that every 1st Monday and 3rd Wednesday of every month will be a Number 1′s Night. Cadets that miss these nights will need to parade in Number 1′s on the following parade night.

Cadets and Adult Instructors from the Rugby Sea Cadet Unit took part in the annual Remembrance Sunday Parade to commemorate those that gave their lives in World War 1 and World War 2.  The Parade took place today on Sunday 8th November 2009 on Hillmorton Road at the Memorial Gates. The cadets were joined by other youth organisations in Rugby to include the Army Cadet Force, Air Training Corps, Brownies, Scouts, Boys Brigade and Girls Brigade, as well as the Royal British Legion, Royal Naval Association and the crew of H.M.S. Tireless, the town’s affiliated Royal Naval Submarine.

Having spent hours of our time and effort raising money at the New ASDA Store in Rugby on Sunday 12th July 2009, we were distraught when the money raised was stolen.  The cadets, adult instructors and helpers had spent the day packing bags at the store to raise funds towards the maintenance of the Sea Cadet Unit and to purchase new equipment. Cadets, Adult Instructors and Helpers from the Rugby Sea Cadet Unit were at the new ASDA Store in Rugby today helping shoppers pack their bags at the tills.  The event was planned by the Parents & Supporters Association at the Sea Cadet Unit in an effort to raise money for equipment and running costs for the group.

The new ASDA store only opened its doors a few weeks back and the Sea Cadets are the first charity group to have helped shoppers in the store.  The group would like to thank the shoppers at ASDA and the staff for their donations and support during the day.
